"The Architect of Brutal Poetry" - New Film by Ladislav Kaboš

Bratislava, 15.09.2021 – Acclaimed director Ladislav Kaboš, laureate of the Crystal Wing and Igric awards, reflects on the "grand history of the 20th century through the fate of an individual" in his latest film. The Architect of Harsh Poetry tells the compelling story of Hans Broos (1921-2011), a Carpathian German from Veľká Lomnica, who was forced to leave Czechoslovakia after World War II. He eventually found a new home in Brazil in 1953, where he became a prominent architect.

In this feature-length documentary, Kaboš uses an intimate narrative style, employing internal monologue to tell the story of Broos's journey as an immigrant, his challenging adaptation to life in a new country, and his ability to harness his talents in a foreign society. Broos's architectural legacy in Brazil includes over 140 Brutalist works, and his career spanned even the most challenging personal times, including his battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Broos's architectural office in São Paulo was responsible for more than 140 completed projects in the Brutalist style. His ability to integrate architecture with nature was groundbreaking. Broos's collaborators and students—now professors of architecture at the University of Florianópolis—have published a second book about his work. Three of his buildings are listed as cultural landmarks in São Paulo, and he is widely regarded as one of the most influential architects of modern Brazilian architecture.

Hans Broos was a visionary, recognizing the extraordinary power of architecture and urbanism on human life. As he said:

"What has been forgotten is what is most important about architecture – to speak without words. We talk through the radio, through the phone, at meetings, but none of this is enough. The population is so large that it is not enough to educate people with words. The masses must be educated through architecture—not individually, but through buildings, and most importantly, through urbanism."

In his career, Broos collaborated with renowned figures such as landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, geologist Aziz Ab'Sáber, and sociologist Gilberto Freyre, whose shared sensitivity to nature and ecology helped ensure Broos's architectural works remain timeless.

The film includes fascinating archival material and authentic correspondence with Broos's father and close relatives. It also addresses the still-taboo subject of the expulsion of the German population after World War II, offering a poignant account of the social hardships faced by Broos and others in similar situations.

Broos's story is a universal one – the journey of all immigrants seeking new opportunities. The Architect of Harsh Poetry is a powerful exploration of resilience, offering a timeless narrative that will resonate with audiences worldwide.

The film's stunning cinematography by Martin Šec and sensitive acting by Imre Boráros (Jókai Theater, Komárno) enrich the emotional storytelling, making it both visually and thematically compelling.
